What is Android?

When we think Android we immediately think of Google, yet you must know that this is not multinational project initiative. Moreover, it is not even the only full-time to contribute to its evolution.

What is ¬†Android…?

The original “Android” was the name of a small American, founded in 2003 and bought by Google in 2005, which was the intention to enter the market for mobile products. The challenge behind Android was to develop a mobile operating system more intelligent, who would not be satisfied only afford to send SMS and forward calls, but would allow the user to interact with its environment (especially with its location). This is why, contrary to popular belief, it is not possible to say that Android is Google’s answer to Apple’s iPhone, since the existence of the latter has been revealed that two years later.

It was in 2007 that the situation took another turn. At that time, each manufacturer √©quipait his phone a proprietary operating system. Each phone and had a more or less different. This system hindered the ability to easily develop applications that would suit all phones, since the base was completely different. A developer was more specialized in a particular system and had to settle for low-level languages like C or C + +. In addition, manufacturers were sure to deliver development libraries very small so as to conceal their secrets. In January 2007, Apple unveiled the iPhone, a phone simply revolutionary for the time. The announcement is a disaster for other manufacturers, which should align with this new competition. The problem is that to reach the level of iOS (iPhone OS), it would have taken years of research and development each manufacturer …

This is why it is created in November of 2007 the Open Handset Alliance (which I now call by its acronym OHA), which had its inception in 35 companies operating in the mobile world, including Google. This alliance aims to develop an open source system (that is to say, whose sources are freely available on the internet) to operate on mobile and thus compete with proprietary systems, such as Windows Mobile and iOS. This alliance flagship software for Android, but it’s not his only activity.

The OHA has currently 80 members.

Android is now the operating system for smartphones and tablets the most used.

Predictions regarding the distribution of Android on the market are very good with more and more machines are equipped with this system. Soon, it will be in some TVs (you’ve heard of Google TV, perhaps?) And cars. Android will be everywhere. It would be a shame not to be part of it, is not it?
